Escort requirements are determined based on load dimensions when traveling on all highways:

On all highways:

• Width over 13’ up to 14’: 1 escort (Chase on multi-lane/Front on 2-lane roads).

• Width of 14’ up to 15': 2 escorts (Lead and Chase).

• Width over 15': 2 escorts (Lead and Chase) plus a state police escort.

• Length of 90' - < 100': 1 Chase escort.

• Length of 100' - < 120': 2 escorts (Lead and Chase).

• Length of 120' or more: 2 escorts (Lead and Chase) + a state police escort.

• Height above 15': 2 escorts (Lead and Chase).

• Height above 17'16": 2 escorts (Lead and Chase) + a state police escort.

• Weight over 120,000 lbs: 2 escorts (Lead and Chase) + a state police escort.

• Rear overhang over 15': 1 Chase unless the permit specifies otherwise.

Note:

• Two escort vehicles (Lead and Chase) are required when the parameters separately demand one escort in the front and one behind for multiple conditions.

• Vehicles and loads that are only overweight or are 12’ or less in width but cannot move freely with the flow of traffic may be subject to escort requirements.

• A separate state police escort (third escort) is required for vehicles and loads more than 15’ in width OR greater than 120’ in length OR higher than 17’6”.

Superloads:

A super load is defined as a vehicle and/or load 15' or more in width, 15' or more in height, 120' or more in length, and/or has a gross weight in excess of 120,000 pounds.
