Idaho

The requisite number and positioning of pilot car escorts in Idaho are determined by route color codes.

When escorts are needed & the number of escorts required:

On red-coded routes:

  • Width over 8'7" to 10' requires 1 escort (Lead).

  • Width over 10' to 12'6" requires 2 escorts (Lead and Chase).

  • Length over 75' requires 1 escort (Lead).

  • If over width and over 75' length, 2 escorts are required (Lead and Chase).

On black-coded routes:

  • Width over 12' to 14' requires 1 escort (Lead).

  • Width over 14' to 14'6" requires 2 escorts (Lead and Chase).

  • Length over 100' requires 1 escort (Lead).

  • If over 12' to 14'6" wide and over 100' in length, 2 escorts are required (Lead and Chase).

On the interstate system:

  • Height over 15' requires 1 escort (Chase).

Night travel:

  • Any overwidth load moving after dark on black-coded routes, if the width exceeds 10', must also be preceded by such a pilot/escort vehicle.

Any overwidth load moving after dark or on weekends on a red-coded route of the Pilot/Escort Vehicle and Travel Time Requirements Map must be preceded by an escort vehicle displaying a rotating or flashing amber light to warn other traffic of the presence of the hazard.

Escort vehicle requirements can vary widely from state to state, encompassing mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, mandatory signage, flags, lighting specifications, essential onboard equipment, and other factors. The SafeGuard team is well-equipped to furnish you with comprehensive information on any additional requirements specific to your designated route.
