Fines for oversize violations in Maryland.

  • Truck size and weight enforcement operations are conducted by the Maryland State Police, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (MSP/CVED), and the Maryland Transportation Authority Police, Commercial Vehicle Safety Unit (MDTAP/CVSU), at Truck Weigh and Inspection Stations (TWIS) throughout Maryland.

  • MDTAP/CVSU primarily conducts operations on toll facilities, while both departments utilize roving patrols equipped with portable scales for size and weight enforcement operations.

  • Vehicles found to exceed any allowable weight limit by 5,000 pounds or more cannot be moved until the excess weight is unloaded, unless specified otherwise in “The Maryland TA, Title 24, § 111.1.”

  • It is prohibited for any person to drive on any publicly maintained highway any vehicle or combination of vehicles with a gross weight exceeding either the maximum registered weight limit under § 24-110 of this subtitle or any other weight limit established under the Maryland Vehicle Law.

  • Violation of this section, regulations established to implement it, or the terms and conditions of an exceptional hauling permit issued under subsection (b) of this section will result in:

    • The invalidation of the authority granted under the exceptional hauling permit.

    • Subjecting the vehicle to all weight requirements and tolerances specified in this article.

    • For violations exceeding 5,000 pounds, immediate confiscation of the exceptional hauling permit by authorized officers or civilian employees.

  • Violation of vehicle laws constitutes a misdemeanor.
