Escort requirements are contingent upon the characteristics of the load and the type of highway:

ON DIVIDED HIGHWAYS:

• Width:

• Up to 12' is a legal load with no escort required.

• Greater than 12' up to 13'6": 1 Chase escort.

• Greater than 13'6": 2 escorts (Lead and Chase).

• 15' or more: 3 escorts (1 Lead and 2 Chases).

• Over 13'5" wide and more than 15' high: 2 state police escorts (Lead and Chase).

• Height:

• Greater than 14’0”: 1 Lead escort.

• 15’1” high or greater and 13’6” width or wider: 1 Lead escort and 2 state police escorts (Lead and Chase).

• 15’4” high or greater: 1 Lead escort and 2 state police escorts (Lead and Chase).

• Length:

• Greater than 100': 1 Chase escort.

• Greater than 119': 2 escorts (Lead and Chase).

• Overhang:

• 25' front or rear overhang requires 1 Chase escort.

ON UNDIVIDED HIGHWAYS:

• Width:

• Up to 12' is a legal load with no escort required.

• Greater than 12' up to 13'6": 1 Lead escort.

• Greater than 13'6": 2 escorts (Lead and Chase).

• 15' or more: 3 escorts (1 Lead and 2 Chases).

• Over 13'5" wide and more than 15' high: 2 state police escorts (Lead and Chase).

• Height:

• Greater than 14’0”: 1Lead escort.

  • 15’1” high or greater and 13’6” width or wider: 1 Lead escort and 2 state police escorts (Lead and Chase).

• 15’4” high or greater: 1 Lead escort and 2 state police escorts (Lead and Chase).

• Length:

• Greater than 90': 1 Chase escort.

• Greater than 100': 2 escorts (Lead and Chase).

• Greater than 119': 2 escorts (Lead and Chase).

• Overhang:

• 25' front or rear overhang requires 1 Chase escort.

MOBILE/MODULAR/SECTIONAL HOUSING:

• Width:

• Up to 10' is a legal load with no escort required.

• Greater than 10' up to 13'6": 1 Chase escort on divided highways and 1 Lead escort on undivided highways.

• Greater than 13'6": 2 escorts (Lead and Chase) on both divided and undivided highways.

• Night moves (pilot program) for loads greater than 14' require 2 escorts (Lead and Chase) and 1 state police escort (Chase) on both divided and undivided highways.

• Length (maximum 66' box and 90'):

• Greater than 80': 1 Chase escort on undivided highways.

• Greater than 85': 2 escorts (Lead and Chase) on both divided and undivided highways.

• Greater than 90': An additional 1 Chase escort on undivided highways.

• Night moves (pilot program) for loads greater than 90' up to a maximum of 104' long require 2 escorts (Lead and Chase) and 1 state police escort (Chase) on both divided and undivided highways.

Superloads:

• WIDTH:

• Greater than 16’: Specific arrangements are required.

• HEIGHT:

• Greater than 16’: Specific arrangements are required.

• LENGTH:

• Greater than 150’: Specific arrangements are required.

• WEIGHT:

• Greater than 200,000 lbs: Specific arrangements are required.

Notes:

• Routes, heights, load characteristics, and traffic volume determine escort requirements on a case-by-case basis.

Convoying is not permitted.
