Escort Regulations:

When escorting loads or convoys exceeding 14’ wide:

On highways of fewer than 4 lanes:

  • Lead and Chase escorts are required.

  • For superloads and large structures, the Chase escort may be omitted if a warning light is affixed to the top of the towing vehicle and to the rear of each load, positioned between 2’ and 8’ above the road surface.

On highways consisting of 4 lanes or more:

  • A rear escort is mandatory for superloads and large structures.

  • Other types of loads do not necessitate escorting.

  • A superload is defined as a vehicle transporting a nondivisible load exceeding 150,000 lbs GVW or where any group of axles surpasses regulatory limitations.

Police State Escorts:

  • The Kansas Highway Patrol does not provide escorts.

Escort vehicle requirements can vary widely from state to state, encompassing mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, mandatory signage, flags, lighting specifications, essential onboard equipment, and other factors. The SafeGuard team is well-equipped to furnish you with comprehensive information on any additional requirements specific to your designated route.
