The owner or lessee of a vehicle exceeding the weight limits defined in sections 169.823 to 169.8295, 169.84 to 169.851, and 169.87, or a shipper shipping goods in a single truck or combination vehicle surpassing these weight limits, is subject to a civil penalty.

If a person convicted of violating these weight limits is also found by the court to have knowingly attempted to evade a fixed weigh station or circumvent weighing through stationary scales under section 169.85 or any other law, the court is required to impose a penalty equal to twice the amount.
