Escort Requirements:

On all highways:

  • Overall length greater than 99' up to 120': 1 escort (Chase).

  • Overall length over 120': 2 escorts (Lead and Chase).

  • Width greater than 13' up to 16': 1 escort (Chase).

  • Width greater than 16': 2 escorts (Lead and Chase).

  • Overhang of 15' or more in front: 1 escort (Lead or Chase).

  • Overhang of 15' or more in the rear: 1 escort (Lead or Chase).

  • Height of loads controlled by route clearance: 1 escort (Lead).

  • Weight on loads controlled by pavement and bridge clearance: 1 escort (Chase).

  • When moving at night operating on 2-lane roadways (1 lane per direction of travel) loads 10’ wide or greater will require, at minimum, the use of a front escort and flashing amber lights mounted on the rear of the load.

  • When moving at night operating on divided highways (2 or more through lanes per direction of travel) loads 10’ wide or greater will require, at minimum, the use of a rear escort and flashing amber lights mounted on the rear of the load.

  • If a load is only overlength, a permit is not required.

Super loads:

  • A super load is any vehicle that exceeds any of the following limits:

  • Overall width of 20'.

  • Overall length of 120'.

  • Overall height of 17'.

Gross weight of 190,000 pounds.
