When Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Are Required in Missouri

  • Length: Loads exceeding 90 feet in overall length require a rear/chase pilot car or escort vehicle on undivided highways.

  • Width:

    • Up to 12 feet: No escort required.

    • Over 12 feet 4 inches: Requires 1 rear/chase escort vehicle.

    • On non-designated roads: 1 escort vehicle and 1 pilot car are required.

  • Height:

    • Over 15 feet 6 inches on two-lane undivided roads: Requires a high-pole pilot car.

    • Over 15 feet on divided highways: Requires 1 pilot car with a high pole. A route survey and bucket trucks may also be necessary.

  • Overhang:

    • Loads longer than 53 feet: Require 1 pilot car.

    • Over 90 feet overall: May require 1 pilot car and 1 escort vehicle.

Notes:
If the shipment exceeds legal limits in two dimensions, both 1 pilot car and 1 escort vehicle are required.
