Escort Requirements

When and How Many Pilot Cars are Needed

Width:

  • Over 12’ (on 2 and 3 lane roads) | 1 escort (Lead)

  • Over 14’ (on 2 and 3 lane roads) | 2 escorts (Lead and Chase)

  • Over 14’ (on 4 or more lane roads) | 1 escort (Chase)

  • Over 16’ (on 4 or more lane roads) | 2 escorts (Lead and Chase)

  • Vehicles over 8'6" wide may be prohibited on certain roads, potentially requiring pilot cars.

Height:

Length:

  • Over 110’ | 1 escort (Chase) *note: Up to 120’ may be allowed with some steerable trailers if there is a steerable letter on file.

  • Vehicles exceeding 70’ in length may be prohibited on certain roads, potentially requiring pilot cars.

Overhang:

  • Over 25’ in front | 1 escort (Lead)

  • Over 25’ in rear | 1 escort (Chase)

Super Loads: Super loads are those exceeding:

  • Width of 17’ (on 2 or 3 lanes) or 19’ (on 4 or more lanes)

  • Height of 18’

  • Length of 200’

Loads 20’ wide on 2 or 3 lanes or 24’ wide on 4 or more lanes and over 18’ high may require submission of route surveys.
