New Hampshire Oversize and Overweight Permits

New Hampshire legal load sizes and weight before a permit is required:

  • Width: 8’ 6 feet.

  • Height: 13’ 6 feet.

  • Length: 53 feet.

  • Weight: 80,000 lbs GVW. 

NOTE:  Everything above is dependent on your axle spacing and tire sizes. Also, note that in the event that you are less than 73,280 lbs pounds (GVW) the single axle limit is increased to 22,440 lbs if needed, and you are allowed up to 36,000 lbs on your tandem axles.

When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in New Hampshire?

  • Length:

    • Over 150 feet: Requires one rear escort. For additional requirements, refer to the "Superloads" section above.

  • Width:

    • Over 12 feet wide: Requires 1 pilot car/truck escort.

    • Over 18 feet wide: Requires 2 pilot cars/truck escorts and may require a state police escort (up to 2, depending on the route).

    • If requesting state police, a minimum of 48 hours' advance notice is required.

  • Height:

    • Over 13 feet 6 inches: Requires a route survey. A height pole escort may not be necessary once the survey is completed, depending on the load's height and the route. The decision will be made by the state.

  • Weight:

    • If the load can maintain minimum speed limits and does not require special bridge restrictions, a pilot car/escort is typically not needed.

  • Overhang:

    • Over 15 feet in length: Requires 1 pilot car/escort.

    • On a 2-lane undivided highway: Requires 2 pilot cars/truck escorts if the load is over 12 feet wide.

How Much Do Trucking Permits Cost in New Hampshire?

  • Oversize Single Trip Permit: $6

  • Oversize Annual Permit (for vehicles less than 75 feet in length, 10'6" in width, 13'6" in height, and legal weight):

    • $115 for statewide haul

    • $60 for moves within a 100-mile radius (for based and registered carriers only)

  • Overweight Permits:

    • 50,000 pounds: $5.50

    • 50,001 to 60,000 pounds: $6.50

    • 60,001 to 70,000 pounds: $7.50

    • 70,001 to 80,000 pounds: $8.50

    • 80,001 to 90,000 pounds: $9.50

    • 90,001 to 100,000 pounds: $10.50

    • Each additional 10,000 pounds: $2

  • Eight Axles: 160,000 pounds

Maximum Dimensions (with Permit) in New Hampshire:

  • Length: Up to 110 feet

  • Overhang: Up to 15 feet

  • Width: Up to 16 feet

  • Height: Up to 16 feet

Note:

If your load exceeds any of these dimensions or 180,000 pounds, it is classified as a superload. All permitted overweight or oversize loads are subject to a detailed bridge analysis.

Bridge Review Requirements:

A bridge review is required if any of the following apply:

  • Any single axle exceeds 27,500 lbs

  • Any axle in a tandem group exceeds 25,000 lbs

  • Any axle in a tridem group exceeds 22,500 lbs

  • Any axle in a quadem group exceeds 20,000 lbs

  • A 5-axle combination group exceeds 100,000 lbs

  • A 6-axle combination group exceeds 120,000 lbs

  • A 7-axle combination group exceeds 130,000 lbs

  • An 8+ axle combination group exceeds 149,999 lbs
