When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in North Carolina?

  • Length: Over 110' requires one escort vehicle at the rear.

  • Width: For 2-lane roads, loads over 12' require one escort vehicle in front. For 4-lane roads, one escort vehicle is required at the rear. Loads over 14' require one escort vehicle in front and one at the rear.

  • Height: Loads over 14' 6" require a high-pole escort.

  • Note: Permits are valid for 10 days.

How Much Do Trucking Permits Cost in North Carolina?

  • Single Trip Permit for any dimensions and weight exceeding the legal limit: $12

  • Annual Permit: $100

  • Superload Permit: $12 for each dimension over the legal limit, $3 per 1,000 pounds above 132,000 pounds, plus a non-refundable application fee of $100 after submission for review
