Escort Guidelines for Oregon Transportation Permits

Requirements for Oversize Loads on Specific Highway Groups and Routes

In adherence to Oregon Transportation Permit Unit regulations, escort criteria are outlined with reference to state-specific highway groups and routes. Please consult ODOT's Route Map 2 for detailed information.

Escort Requirements Based on Width:

Major 2-lane Routes (Green on Route Map 2):

  • Generally, oversize loads don’t necessitate a Lead escort until the width exceeds 12'.

  • Certain routes, indicated in purple on Route Map 2, may require an escort(s) for widths exceeding 9'.

  • If width exceeds 12 feet, certified flaggers and signing, as per The Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, are required. Alternatively, the certified rolling stop method (three pilot vehicles) is mandated.

On Interstate Highways and 4-lane Roads:

  • A minimum of 1 Chase escort is necessary for vehicles over 14’ in width on interstate highways and 4-lane roads.

  • The specific number of escorts depends on the route and load dimensions.

Escort Requirements Based on Height, Length, and Overhangs:

  • The permit office may stipulate escorts for vehicles exceeding legal length and/or height limits.

Super Loads:

  • Any load exceeding the following dimensions is categorized as a super load:

  • Over 16’ wide on the Interstate

  • Over 14’ wide on any state two-lane highway

  • Over 17’ high on any highway

  • Mobile or modular units with a box width over 14’ and/or overall width exceeding 15’

  • Overall length greater than 150’.

Permits for super loads may take up to 10 days to be issued.

Escort vehicle requirements can vary widely from state to state, encompassing mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, mandatory signage, flags, lighting specifications, essential onboard equipment, and other factors. The SafeGuard team is well-equipped to furnish you with comprehensive information on any additional requirements specific to your designated route.
