Fines for oversize violations in South Carolina.

  • Operating a vehicle on a public highway with an axle weight exceeding the limits set by Section 56-5-4130 or 56-5-4140 constitutes a misdemeanor.

  • Upon conviction, the individual may face a fine of five cents per pound or a maximum imprisonment of thirty days, or both.

  • If the vehicle's gross weight remains within the limits prescribed by this article and the axle weight does not exceed the specified limits by more than five percent, including enforcement tolerances, the fine is reduced by fifty percent, with a minimum fine of twenty-five dollars.

  • Similarly, operating a vehicle found to exceed the excess gross weight limitations outlined in Section 56-5-4130 or 56-5-4140 is also considered a misdemeanor.

  • Upon conviction, the individual is required to pay a fine to the Department of Public Safety based on a specified scale.
