Escort Requirements:

When Escorts are Required & Number of Escorts:

  1. One pilot vehicle is mandatory for vehicles or loads exceeding the following conditions:

  • 12’ in width on secondary highways (non-interstate).

  • 14’ in width on divided highways (interstates).

  • 105’ in length on secondary highways.

  • 120’ in length on divided highways.

  • Overhangs exceeding 20’ (Lead or Chase).

  1. Two pilot escort vehicles are required for vehicles or loads exceeding the following conditions:

  • 14’ in width on secondary highways.

  • 16’ in width on divided highways.

  • 120’ in length on secondary highways.

  • 16’ in height on all highways.

  • When otherwise mandated by the division.

Additional Notes:

  • Certain designated interstate highways are considered as interstates for measurement purposes.

  • Mobile and manufactured homes with eaves greater than 12” include eaves in overall width measurement.

Night Travel:

  • Limits for nighttime travel: 12’ wide on secondary highways, 14’6” wide on interstates, or 14’ high on all roadways.

  • Loads exceeding 10’ wide, 105’ overall length, or 10’ front or rear overhang need certified pilot escorts on interstates and two on secondary highways during nighttime travel.

Police Escorts:

  • Required for vehicles with loads exceeding 17’ wide or 17’6” high on secondary highways, or 20’ wide or 17’6” high on all highways.

  • Loads over 175’ in length require a minimum of one police escort.

  • Loads over 200’ in length necessitate a minimum of two police escorts.

  • Division may mandate police escorts based on extenuating circumstances.

Super Loads:

Generally, super loads are those exceeding 14'6" wide, 14' high, and 105' in length.

Escort vehicle requirements can vary widely from state to state, encompassing mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, mandatory signage, flags, lighting specifications, essential onboard equipment, and other factors.
