  2. Length over 90' to 125':

  • 1 Rear escort on a 2-lane highway.

  1. Length over 125' to 150' (excluding mobile homes):

  • 2 escorts (Lead & Chase) required on a 2-lane highway.

For Super loads (defined as exceeding 16' wide, 16" high, 150' long, or 250,000 pounds), pre-approval is required. The following items are necessary for consideration:

  1. A detailed letter of request justifying the need for a permit, including reasons why alternative transportation methods like rail or barge are not feasible.

  2. Load dimensions.

  3. Detailed drawings or plans showing the entire axle configuration, including truck-tractor details, axle spacing, and weights in U.S. measurements.

  4. Certified scale ticket for loads with weight.

  5. A comprehensive route survey indicating all points of contact and strategies to avoid them.

  6. For loads exceeding 16' wide or high: Minimum two police escorts (lead and chase). Contact the Alabama Trooper Association only after permit office pre-approval is confirmed.

  7. Utility notification for loads over 16' 6" high, including power, cable, telephone, and traffic signal owners.

  8. City or County Engineers approval required for travel on city or county roads.

ALDOT may require additional insurance coverage as security for any potential damage to public roads or bridges on the Superload route.

Escort vehicle requirements can vary widely from state to state, encompassing mandatory driver qualifications, training, certifications, vehicle weights, mandatory signage, flags, lighting specifications, essential onboard equipment, and other factors. The SafeGuard team is well-equipped to furnish you with comprehensive information on any additional requirements specific to your designated route.
