When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Connecticut?

Width:

  • Over 12' wide: 1 rear escort (or front and rear if on an undivided highway).

  • Over 13' 6": 1 front and 1 rear escort.

  • Over 15': 1 front and 2 rear escorts.

Height:

  • Over 14': 1 pilot car in the front.

Length:

  • Over 80': 1 rear escort on undivided highways.

  • Over 100': 1 front and 1 rear escort on undivided highways. On divided highways, only 1 rear escort is required.

  • Over 119': 1 front and 1 rear escort on undivided highways.

For Sectional or Modular Homes:

  • 16' wide maximum. No pilot car required until 10' wide.

  • At 10' wide: 1 rear escort on undivided highways if the load exceeds lane width.

  • From 10' wide to 13' 6": 1 rear escort on divided highways and 1 rear on undivided highways.

  • Over 13' 6" wide: 1 front and 1 rear escort on all roads.

  • Over 80' in length: 1 rear escort on undivided highways.

  • Over 85' in length: 1 front and 1 rear escort on all routes.

How Much Do Trucking Permits Cost in Connecticut?

Oversize and overweight single trip permits in Connecticut: $30, plus a $12 electronic transmittal fee.


For single trip permits exceeding 200,000 pounds: $2 per 1,000 pounds over 200,000 pounds.


Annual divisible load permits: $9 per 1,000 pounds, plus a $12 electronic transmittal fee.


Monthly divisible load permits: $100, plus a $12 electronic transmittal fee.


Annual indivisible load permits: $9 per 1,000 pounds, plus a $12 electronic transmittal fee.

Maximum weight limits for loads with a permit in Connecticut:

  • Single Axle Weight Permits: 22,500 pounds

  • Tandem Axle Weight Permits: 45,000 pounds

  • Tridem Axle Weight Permits: 67,500 pounds

  • Five Axle Weight Permits: 122,000 pounds

  • Six Axle Weight Permits: 130,000 pounds

  • Seven Axle Weight Permits: 150,000 pounds

  • Eight Axle Weight Permits: 160,000 pounds

Notes:

  • Cranes:

    • Four-axle cranes: Maximum GVW of 110,000 pounds.

    • Tandem axle cranes: Maximum GVW of 60,900 pounds, with no more than 23 feet from the center of the first axle to the last axle.

    • Five-axle cranes: Maximum GVW of 114,500 pounds, with a maximum of 30,000 lbs on a single axle, 45,000 lbs on tandem axles, or 66,100 lbs on tridem axles.

    • Six-axle cranes: Maximum GVW of 115,000 pounds, with a maximum of 68,200 lbs on tandem axles, and no more than 28 feet from the center of the first axle to the last axle.

  • Modular and Mobile Homes:

    • 16 feet wide, Monday to Friday travel only. Travel time is restricted from 11:30 PM to 4:30 AM, as specified in the permit.
