  • Weight: 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight (GVW)

When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Florida?

Here are the pilot car requirements in Florida based on load dimensions:

  • Length: Shipments over 95 feet long require 1 rear pilot car. If the overhang exceeds 20 feet, additional requirements may apply.

  • Width: Shipments over 12 feet wide require at least 1 pilot car or escort vehicle, with some routes potentially needing 2. For shipments over 14 feet wide, 2 pilot cars or escort vehicles are required. Shipments over 15 feet wide may require a police escort in addition to 2 pilot cars or escort vehicles.

  • Height: Shipments over 14 feet 6 inches tall require 1 escort vehicle. For shipments over 16 feet, 2 pilot cars or escort vehicles are necessary. Any shipment exceeding 15 feet in height will require a written route survey.

  • Overhang: Rear overhang extending up to 20 feet past the center of the rear axle (or dolly) may require 1 pilot car or escort vehicle.
