Escort Requirements:

Civilian Escort Vehicles:

  • One civilian escort vehicle is required for moves that exceed 14’6” in width, 110’ in length, or 14’6” in height.

  • Additionally, one civilian escort is needed for any move requiring extra warning to the public, such as travel during darkness, weekends for emergency response, or as determined by the Department’s Bridge Office’s analysis or District Investigations.

  • Two civilian escorts are required for moves exceeding both 14’6” in width and 14’6” in height, 14’6” in height and 110’ in length, or 14’6” in width and 110’ in length.

  • Three civilian escorts are necessary for moves exceeding 16’ in width, 145’ in length, or 18’ in height.

  • The determination of Lead or Chase escorts is based on routing and permit specifications.

Police Escorts (Illinois State Police):

  • Illinois State Police escorts are required for moves exceeding 18’ in width, 200’ in length, or 18’ in height.

  • They are also mandated for overweight moves necessitating bridge restrictions that require all traffic to be kept off a structure during the permitted vehicle's crossing, or for any move of an unusual nature where additional traffic control is necessary.

  • State police escort is generally required for moves outside of the municipality, with a minimum 24-hour notice.

Municipal Police:

  • The permit office will determine the need for state or municipal police escort for moves partially or wholly within a municipality.

Permit Application Review Times:

  • For moves >16’ Wide, >17’ High, >200’ Long: Requires a district investigation and can take up to 10 full working days.

  • For moves ≤249,999 lbs. GVW with any structure showing a Bridge Weight Conflict rating: Requires either a Manual Bridge Analysis taking up to 5 full working days or an Illinois State Police escort set up at least 24 hours prior to movement (Holidays and weekends excluded).

  • For moves >299,999 lbs. GVW, trunnion (dual-lane trailer) moves, or 29,000 lbs. on a single axle: Requires a Manual Bridge Analysis taking up to 5 full working days.
