When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Kansas?

Heavy-haul or oversized loads may require an escort vehicle or pilot car in the following cases:

  • Length: If the load exceeds 90 feet overall, you must have one rear/chase pilot car or escort vehicle.

  • Width: Loads over 14 feet wide require one front escort and one rear escort. On 4-lane roads, the rear escort may be replaced with an amber light on the cab or rear of the load. The light must be at least 2 feet above the pavement and no more than 8 feet from the ground. This does not apply to superloads or loads on more than 4 lanes. On the Turnpike, at least one escort vehicle is required for loads over 14 feet wide.

  • Height: Loads over 17 feet tall require a high pole escort.

 

Notes: Permits will specify whether they are valid for 3 or 5 days. All signs, flags, and amber lights must be removed or covered when not in use.

How Much Do Trucking Permits Cost in Kansas?

  • Single trip oversize permits in Kansas: $20

  • 5-year permit for transporting bales of hay under subsection: $25

  • Annual oversize permits: $150

  • Special vehicle combination permits (for qualified companies authorized under K.S.A 8-1915 and amendments): $2,000, plus a $50 annual fee for each power unit operating under this permit
