When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Maine?

If your shipment exceeds any of the following dimensions, a pilot car or escort vehicle will be required by the Maine DOT:

  • Width:

    • 12 feet to 14 feet: 1 pilot car or escort vehicle required.

    • 14 feet 6 inches to 15 feet 11 inches: 2 pilot cars or escort vehicles required.

  • Height: Over 16 feet: State police escort required.

  • Length:

    • Over 79 feet 11 inches: 1 pilot car or escort vehicle required.

    • Over 110 feet: 2 pilot cars or escort vehicles required.

    • Over 125 feet: State police escort required.

Notes:

  • "Oversize Load" signs must be displayed in 10-inch high black letters on a yellow background, at least 7 feet wide and 18 inches high, placed on both the front and rear of the load.

  • 18-inch by 18-inch flags must be placed on all four corners of the load.

  • Pilot cars must have a 2-way radio with a range of at least ½ mile and maintain contact with the truck.

  • The truck must have a flashing amber light on top of the cab.

For divided highways, a single pilot car or escort vehicle will be positioned at the rear of the load. On undivided highways, one pilot car or escort vehicle will be placed at the front of the load.
