Montana Oversize and Overweight Permits

Any shipment exceeding the following dimensions or weight requires a special state-issued permit:

  • Length: Over 75 feet

  • Width: Over 8 feet 6 inches

  • Height: Over 14 feet

  • Weight: Over 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight (GVW)

When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Montana?

If your shipment falls under any of the following conditions, pilot cars or escort vehicles will be required:

  • Length:

    • On two-lane roads, shipments over 105′ require one pilot car or escort vehicle in the rear.

    • On four-lane roads, shipments over 120′ require one pilot car or escort vehicle in the rear.

  • Width:

    • On two-lane roads:

      • Over 12′ requires one pilot car or escort vehicle in the front.

      • Over 14′ requires one pilot car or escort vehicle in the front and one in the rear.

    • On four-lane roads:

      • Between 14′ and 18′ requires one pilot car or escort vehicle in the rear.

  • Height:

    • Not specified; the company is responsible for ensuring safe clearance for all structures.

How Much Do Trucking Permits Cost in Montana?

  • Single Trip Permit: $10

  • Triples Permit (Single Trip): $20

  • Annual Oversize Permit: $75

  • Annual Overlength Doubles Permit: $125

  • Term Permit (Triples): $200

A shipment exceeding any of the following dimensions or weight is classified as a superload and requires an extensive review process to obtain permits:

  • Length: Over 110 feet

  • Width: Over 18 feet

  • Height: Over 17 feet

  • Weight: Over 100,000 pounds

Superload (Class 1):

  • Applies to loads exceeding 18 feet wide (up to 34 feet), 17 feet high (up to 24 feet), or 150 feet long (up to 200 feet).

  • Requires approval from the appropriate department district administrator or their designee through a completed superload permit application.

  • A decision on the application will be issued within two working days after submission of a properly completed application.

  • Any restricted travel requirements may be waived at the discretion of the MCS administrator or their designee.

Superload (Class 2):

  • Applies to loads exceeding 34 feet wide, 24 feet high, or 200 feet long.

  • Requires approval from the appropriate department district administrator or their designee via a superload permit application.

  • A decision on the application will be issued within five working days after submission of a properly completed application.

  • Any restricted travel requirements may be waived at the discretion of the MCS administrator or their designee.
