When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in South Dakota?

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements in South Dakota:

  • Length: For loads between 75' and 95' on a 2-lane road, you will need one rear pilot car (escort).

  • Width:

    • 10' 6" to 12' wide on a 2-lane road requires 1 front pilot car.

    • On a 4-lane road, loads up to 12' wide require no escorts.

    • Loads 12' 1" to 14' wide require 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort) on all 2-lane roads, and 1 rear pilot car on 4-lane roads.

    • For loads 14' 1" to 15' wide, 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort) is required.

    • For loads 15' 1" to 16' wide on 2-lane roads, 2 front pilot cars (escorts) and 1 rear pilot car (escort) are required. On 4-lane roads, 1 front and 2 rear pilot cars (escorts) are needed.

    • For weekend travel, a police escort will be required. Districts and parkways may also need additional escorts.

    • Loads over 14' wide cannot travel on Fridays except on parkways, where the maximum width is 16'. A police escort is required for widths exceeding 15' on the Parkway.

  • Height: If the load exceeds 15', a front high-pole card is required. Check the state's list of bridge heights for vertical clearance details.

  • Weight: Contact the State to determine if your weight class requires a pilot car/escort.

  • Overhang:

    • For front overhangs exceeding 10' on 2 or 4-lane roads, 1 front pilot car (escort) is required.

    • If the rear overhang exceeds 10' on a 2 or 4-lane road, one rear escort is needed.

How Much Do Trucking Permits Cost in South Dakota?

  • Single Trip Oversize and Overweight Permit: $25, or $200 for a book of 10. An additional overweight fee of $0.02 per ton-mile applies if the motor vehicle exceeds the following weight thresholds:
