When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Utah?
-
Pilot car and escort vehicle requirements:
-
Length: Shipments over 110 feet in length will require 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort).
-
Width: Shipments over 14 feet in width will require 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort).
-
Height: The need for a high pole escort depends on the proposed route. If the load exceeds 15 feet, you may need a front high pole escort. If the load is 17 feet or higher, a front high pole escort is likely required. For clarification, contact the Utah port directly.
-
Weight: Consult with the Utah port to determine if your weight class requires a pilot car or escort.
-
Overhang: There are no specified overhang limits. The ports prefer to inspect this directly. If your load appears secure, safe, and well-marked with flags or amber lights, you might not need a pilot car, especially if the load isn’t excessively long.
