Utah Oversize and Overweight Permits

Here are the maximum load sizes in Utah before a permit is required:

  • Length: 53 feet

  • Width: 8’ 6”

  • Height: 14 feet

  • Weight: 80,000 lbs GVW

  • Overhang: 3 feet in the front, 6 feet in the rear

When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Utah?

  • Pilot car and escort vehicle requirements:

  • Length: Shipments over 110 feet in length will require 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort).

  • Width: Shipments over 14 feet in width will require 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort).

  • Height: The need for a high pole escort depends on the proposed route. If the load exceeds 15 feet, you may need a front high pole escort. If the load is 17 feet or higher, a front high pole escort is likely required. For clarification, contact the Utah port directly.

  • Weight: Consult with the Utah port to determine if your weight class requires a pilot car or escort.

  • Overhang: There are no specified overhang limits. The ports prefer to inspect this directly. If your load appears secure, safe, and well-marked with flags or amber lights, you might not need a pilot car, especially if the load isn’t excessively long.
