Length: For shipments over 105′ in total length on a two-lane road, you will need 1 rear pilot car (escort). If the overall combination exceeds 125′ on multi-lane roads, 1 rear pilot car (escort) is required.
Width: On two-lane highways, shipments over 11′ wide require 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort). On multi-lane highways, shipments over 14′ wide will require 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort).
Height: Shipments exceeding 14′ 6″ in height require 1 front pilot car (escort) equipped with a height pole. Manufactured homes over 15′ tall will also need 1 front pilot car with a height pole. The Virginia State Shipping Regulations Department does not guarantee height clearances and recommends using a height pole pilot car if there is any doubt.
Weight: For loads routinely permitted, an escort is typically not required.
Overhang: If the rear overhang exceeds 1/3 of the trailer length, 1 rear escort is required on two-lane highways. If the rear overhang exceeds 20′ for a single-unit vehicle, 1 rear escort is required on two-lane highways, according to Virginia state regulations.
