When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Indiana?

  • Height:

    • On two-lane roads, loads over 14′ 6″ require one front pilot car or escort vehicle.

    • On four-lane roads, loads over 14′ 6″ require one rear pilot car or escort vehicle.

  • Length:

    • On two-lane roads, loads over 85′ require one front pilot car or escort vehicle.

    • On four-lane roads, loads over 85′ require one rear pilot car or escort vehicle.

How Much Do Trucking Permits Cost in Indiana?

  • Single-Trip Oversize Permits:

    • Up to 95 feet in length, 12′4″ in width, and 13′6″ in height: $20

    • Between 95–110 feet in length, 12′4″–16 feet in width, and 13′6″–15 feet in height: $30

  • 90-Day Oversize Permit: $100

  • Annual Oversize Permit: $405

  • Annual Shipping Container Permit: $800

  • Oversize and Overweight Single Permits:

    • Base Fee: $20

    • Additional charges:

      • GVW 80,001–108,000 pounds: $0.35 per mile

      • GVW 108,001–150,000 pounds: $0.60 per mile

      • GVW 150,001 and over: $1.00 per mile

    • Note: Fees are based on either the oversize-only rate or overweight rate, whichever is greater.

  • Additional Fees for Heavier Vehicles:

    • Vehicles over 120,000 pounds: $10 executive fee

    • Vehicles over 200,000 pounds:

      • $10 executive fee

      • $25 design and review fee

      • $10 bridge fee (minimum $100 for fewer than 10 bridges)

  • Toll Road Gate Permit: $20 annually per gate per truck

  • Tandem Axle Weight Permit: 44,000 pounds

  • Tridem Axle Weight Permit: 66,000 pounds

  • Quantum Axle Weight Permit: 88,000 pounds

  • Five Axle Weight Permit: 102,000 pounds

  • Six Axle Weight Permit: 124,000 pounds

  • Seven Axle Weight Permit: 146,000 pounds

  • Eight Axle Weight Permit: 168,000 pounds

 

Additionally, here are the maximum dimensions allowed for oversize loads in Alabama with a permit:
