When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in New Jersey?

  • Width:

    • On 2-lane roads, loads over 14 feet require one pilot car or escort vehicle in the front.

    • On 4-lane roads, loads over 14 feet require one pilot car or escort vehicle in the rear.

    • For all loads over 16 feet, one pilot car or escort vehicle is required in both the front and rear.

  • Length:

    • On 2-lane roads, loads over 100 feet require one pilot car or escort vehicle in the rear.

    • For loads over 120 feet, one pilot car or escort vehicle is required in both the front and rear.

  • Height:

    • Loads over 14 feet require one high pole pilot car or escort in the front.

How Much Do Trucking Permits Cost in New Jersey?

  • Single Trip Overweight Permit: $10

  • Single Trip Oversize and Overweight Permit: $20

  • Single Trip Permit for Weight Over 80,000 Pounds: $5 per ton

  • Annual Ocean-Borne Container Permit: $100

  • Transaction/Service Charge: $12, plus a 5% service charge on the total permit cost
